AWS vs. GCP Regions
Where you run your application matters. Latency to your users, proximity to your database, compliance requirements, and existing cloud investments all factor into the decision. Gigalixir lets you choose between AWS and GCP when you create your app. Run in the US or Europe. Match your database region to minimize latency. Keep everything on one cloud provider if that simplifies your architecture. The choice is yours at app creation time.
Four Regions Available: Deploy to GCP us-central1, GCP europe-west1, AWS us-east-1, or AWS us-west-2. New apps default to GCP us-central1, but you can specify your preference with the --cloud and --region flags when creating your app.
Match Your Existing Infrastructure: If your company runs on AWS, deploy your Gigalixir app on AWS. Connect to RDS databases, S3 buckets, and other AWS services with minimal latency. Same logic applies if you're a GCP shop.
European Data Residency: Need to keep data in Europe for GDPR or other compliance requirements? Deploy to GCP europe-west1. Your application and its traffic stay within European infrastructure.
One-Time Decision: Region is set at app creation and can't be changed easily afterward. If you need to migrate regions later, you'll create a new app and transition traffic. Choose thoughtfully upfront, or contact support if you need guidance on the best region for your use case.
